Sentiero affascinante

THE CITY

Fifth Sardinian city for inhabitants (44,000), Alghero is the gateway to the island, thanks to the airport of Fertilia, as well as one of its most loved places, thanks to exciting walks along the ramparts of the port, the red roofs that touch the sky and the splendid natural inlet overlooking the emerald sea. Its coast is about 90 kilometers long, called Riviera del Corallo: here lives the largest colony of coral of the finest quality. The historic center is the most fascinating part of the city. A labyrinth of alleys that emerge in squares full of life. The yellow walls and old houses evoke the Catalan origins of the town. As well as the religious buildings: the cathedral of Santa Maria (16th century), the churches of Carmelo (second half of the 17th), with its large gilded altarpiece, of San Michele, with its characteristic dome in colored majolica, and of Sant' Anna (1735), in the late Renaissance style. Speaking of culture, visit the Manno house, a research center with a rich heritage of paintings, furnishings, books and manuscripts. Alghero is famous for its coral, which in the local manufacturing art is combined with gold in a happy artistic combination. Not to be missed is the Coral museum, which reveals its history and forms.

Visiting the historic center of Alghero is truly a unique experience:

  • take a walk in search of the Catalan-Aragonese towers and discover the Tower of Porta Terra (a top floor terrace offers a splendid panoramic view) and the Sulis Tower;

  • admire the Renaissance and Baroque churches: the Church of San Francesco, the oldest, its quiet cloister is the evocative setting for summer concerts; there Cathedral of Santa Maria, a mixture  of different styles from the 16th to the 19th century, with an ancient facade with Doric columns and its campa Gothic-Catalan nile overlooking the old town; and the Church of San Michele which, with its colored dome built in the 1950s by the Algherese architect Antoni Simon Mossa, is one of the symbols of the city.

Must see  even the Civic Theater (built in 1862, the only theater in Sardinia that preserves the original wooden supporting structure) and the main museums of the city:

  • The archaeological Museum (obtained in an ancient building in the historic center called "Carceretto"), which collects archaeological finds from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages;

  • The Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art (located in the former church of the Rosary), a collection of priceless sacred art and African sacred paintings and works of art;

  • The Coral Museum (located inside an Art Nouveau villa) which shows the history of our Mediterranean through the main resources of the area, the "Corallium Rubrum";
