OUTLINE OF ARCHAEOLOGY IN NORTHERN SARDINIA
For archeology enthusiasts we recommend the prehistoric altar of Monte d'Accoddi, a rare example of ziggurat in the Mediterranean area, e the excavations of Turris Lybisonis, the current Porto Torres, which was, after Calaris, the most important city of Sardinia in Roman times.
Alghero is located on the extreme western coast of the north-western territory of Sardinia: from here in about an hour you can reach many different places rich in history and archeology.
Going south on the Carlo Felice, there is the territory of Meilogu, with the renowned valley of the nuraghi, the imposing palace of Santu Antine and the extraordinary domus de janas of Sant'Andrea Priu.
The city of Sassari is only half an hour from Alghero: it has a beautiful medieval old town with a Cathedral with a spectacular baroque facade; Piazza d'Italia is the main square of the city in the Albertine style, some Liberty villas embellish the residential streets. To visit the GA Sanna National Archaeological Museum.
Going north-east, Castelsardo and Osilo are worth a visit, with their castles and the Museo dell'Intreccio. Around Nulvi, in the countryside of some municipalities in Anglona (Bulzi, Laerru, Perfugas) but above all in Martis, in the Carrucana area, the remains of very ancient petrified forests dating back to twenty million years ago are visible: outcrops of fossils resulting from slow silicification processes.
